Does a general practitioner give you anxiety meds or do you go to a mental healh!

Question: General practitioners usually are referred to as a Family Medicine, or a primary care physician (either is more accurate a description). The primary care physician runs diagnostics and tests and examines you. He can prescribe any medicine that he thinks you need. If he thinks you need more advanced care for a mental health problem, he would refer you to a specialist. Most insurance coverage will require you to see a primary care doctor first, so thats the best place to start.

Yes, they can prescribe anxiety drugs.

Don't take them. Check out the material on fhu.com.

Usually they will refer you to a specialist, who has the authority to give out those kinds of drugs, which are usually monitored by the DEA.

If they have MD behind their name they can write anxiety scripts. However I would suggest you see a psychiatrist to find out the root of your anxiety

A psychiatrist will be able to help more. They usely go higher on dosages than a general DR.

My general practitioner prescribed anxiety medication, but he strongly suggested I also see a therapist as the combination of the two works the best. I agree. I didn't feel like the medication helped, and in many ways it seemed make my anxiety worse because the side effects were so unbearable (extreme nausea and very dizzy). I take Xanax sometimes if I'm having a panic attack but I don't think I'll ever take an antidepressant again.
