Nobody is really sure exactly what causes the destruction of the pigment cells, although there is a lot of evidence that it is a type of autoimmune disorder, and there is likely a genetic component as well. People with autoimmune disorders are more likely to develop it and it tends to run in families. There are several different ways they try to treat it, from sunlight exposure to medications. They all have side effects and some don't work at all. And some folks nothing helps. So no, there isn't a cure. Fortunately, the skin pigment is the only thing that is affected, and skin color isn't everything. It's upsetting emotionally for people with darker complexions because it's obviously more noticeable, but it's not life threatening. A dermatologist would be the best person to speak with about treatment options, and prognosis- as it's something that is very individual and best treated case by case.

My friend has this on her arm. The doctor gave her a cream to keep it from spreading, but it didn't really work. The spot runs from her elbow halfway down her forearm. It's hereditary, as her mother has it on both hands.

Also - they are both caucasian
