Why do pimples under the skin hurt so much?!

I heard they hurt because they stretch the skin or something and make it super-sensitive, thus painful to the touch/movement of the area.
What I do is get a clean cloth and wet it with really warm water (hot, but don't burn yourself of course). This helps the pimple come to a head, so it eventually goes away easier.
Try not to touch it too much though. It can scar.
It must be close to a nerve ending and yes they're excruciating especially as they seem to itch and really let you know they're there if you scratch! Try the hot flannel method as described and leave it alone, the last thing you want to do is risk infection too.
