Pain in the neck?!

Question: Over the last few months I've noticed the right side of my neck feels a bit different to the left. The best way to describe it is that it sometimes feels a bit more 'congested'. Through my day at work sometimes it gets stiff, and feels warmer than usual. The stiffness is on the side and round to the back of my neck, and a little bit down to my shoulder as well.
It's not really pain, just feels quite stiff at times. Feels a bit dodgy in the mornings sometimes as well.
I've always been able to feel a small lump in the right hand side of my neck. No bigger than 1cm probably smaller and it has never really felt "swollen", its just there. If I want to feel the lump I have to dig right into my neck to find it. It's not easily palpable. I'm now wondering if it could be bad. But I could swear that I have been able to feel it for years.
Anyone know what might be wrong??

Go to your family doctor and have him refer you to a neurologist and/or orthopedist (most docs will go with the orthopedist first to see if it's muscular in nature or bone related; neurologists deal with the nerves and spinal cord). Whatever it is, you're having cervical pain (cervical simply meaning neck), which could be due to a number of things. The lump you feel could just be muscle, but best to go to the doctor. And the warmth and stiffness you feel are very common. Pain isn't always just "ouch;" there can be numbness, tingling, warmth, throbbing, stabbing, shooting, gnawing, cramping, aching, spasming, radiating (moving up or down/spreading), burning.....

I don't know why you have it; it could just be "idiopathic." But have you been sleeping comfortably? When you feel kinda cruddy in the morning, are you tired too? What's your exercise routine like (if you do exercise)? Are you over-straining yourself? Have you been in a car or work accident at any point in the past, even if you thought you were fine at the time?

Long story short, go to your doctor. It's probably nothing severe or life threatening. Some people have chronic pain disorders that just seem to pop up for no known reason. But your doctor, especially any specialist you see, will help you narrow down potential causes, as well as order X-rays and/or MRIs to check you out on the inside.

Good luck!

please go to the doctor. it could just be an aggravated gland but it could also be something REALLY bad. time is not on your side so just get it checked out

You could have a pinched nerve or a slipped disk in your neck. I'd go to the doctor for an x-ray

I get headaches. Much less often now that I am visiting a Chiropractor. I go to a Chiropractor on a regular weekly basis now. Once per week. Luckily, the insurance covers once per week. Every time I have a bad headache, the chiropractor will try to turn my head to the left and right, and it is always restricted on one side. He adjusts my neck and it really pops! Then I feel better. It could be that you need to be adjusted. My neck is tender on the sides at times also. It feels stiff and like you said kinda congested. Have the Chiropractor check it out! A lot of times, they will x-ray for free and the first visit can be on the same day as your x-ray results! The Chiropractor has really helped my family.

Go to a physiotherapy clinic and with a light workout on your neck this may fix it sounds like you have a disk out,
