its a gas so it passes thru pants fabric, and i think its like methane and probably made from the acids in ur stomach and intestines. they probably don't go up because its heavier than air, so it spreads around the room and everyone thinks to themselves, "who farted?" don't eat so many beans.

I guess it all depends on what you've been eating,as far as the smell goes.If the need be then no matter if,where or when the chances are that it will still smell.Farts are caused by excessive wind in the bowl and everyone does them,they get smellier the closer to you needing to use your bowl.This is because the poo is moving down pushing the wind out.
