You've noticed some of the signs of bipolar disorder. That is either a period of mania (being dangerously happy/irritable and impulsive) and periods of being 'normal' stable or periods of depression (being miserable/irritable). You can look the symptoms up online.
Once you've noticed these changes or any significant changes in your child's behavior, you should take them to a child or adolescent psychologist for testing and diagnosis. I think most parents would just assume the kid was on drugs though. As a teen I can't even count the number of times my parents, teachers and friends accused me of being on drugs and didn't believe me when I said I was just mad!
