Somethings been up?!
Question:
Somethings been up?
Since I was about 11, I've struggled with stress, mood swings and perfectionism/obsession and compulsion. It's very hard to live normally, as I am either hyped up or down, and I have been told it is impossible to see that I am ever satisfied with my best, and have difficulty doing less than very well for the sake of sanity.
I work as a dishwasher. It is a hard job, but today, for some reason while training an employee, I had an emotional breakdown and had to call a parent to pick me up early. I could no longer focus on my work, I suddenly felt weak, and my confidence was completely shut down. Began hyperventilating, and it took 20 mins to finally settle down.
I want to be a med student and keep a good job, but I feel it is difficult to get anything done with my personality. What's up?
Answers:
Hyperventilation is the key, here. It was almost certainly a panic attack, so see panic attacks (note particularly the association between panic attacks and trying excessively to please: this does not necessarily have to refer exclusively to pleasing others: it may also include yourself), stress, OCD, and bipolar disorder at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris... on pages 8, 7, and 5, and practise daily, and when needed, one of the relaxation techniques on page 2, read that page; note the tips at the mental-health-abc and conquering stress websites, and check out the self confidence ones.. Understand and come to accept that human beings are imperfect: that perfection sets an impossibly high standard to achieve, and is only ever rarely achieved. Such a requirement precludes the ready accomplishment of many normal, daily activities, within a reasonable time. It will be counterproductive to the achievement of your aims. Set your sights a little lower, and congratulate and reward yourself, when you do a very good job, in a reasonable time, rather than an excellent one, which usually takes more time and effort. Don't pat yourself on the back for the attainment of excellence, or distinction:- if it happens: well, and good, but don't let it be your aim, which, in your case, should be a B+. Therapy would help you, so contact your county/local mental health agency, or Catholic counselling/Methodist church, to find out what is available for you, and take advantage of any counselling services on offer at your educational institution. Review your diet, minimising/eliminating sugar, processed foods, caffeine, and soda. More vegetables, fruits, and whole foods. See www.mercola.com Look for a better job.
