Is there a name for this?

All my life I've been a loner. In 31 years I've had 3 close friends. I want to go out and meet people but I'm very afraid. Being around people makes me very anxious and I tend to alienate others instead of talking to them. I don't trust people and always expect the worst to happen. The 3 friends I've ever had have all stabbed me in the back over really stupid things. I feel lonely, but just can't make friends. I also don't leave the house unless it is absolutely necessary(ie to run errands). I feel like a prisoner in my house, but I just can't seem to leave. Is this a real psychological problem? If so how can I overcome it and have a better life? Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Hello jdsgirl. I don´t think the name is relevant. Most mental illnesses overlap. It could be social phobia, anxiety, agoraphobia or you are just a loner. Do not feel bad if your 3 best friends stabbed you in the back. Most of our friends have. I am in a similar situation. Have only 3 friends, 33 years old, want to meet people but feel anxious around social situations. It is not true that you can´t make friends. It takes will power and get over you not trusting people. Try to make efforts to go out everytime you can. At the beginning will be difficult but everytime it will get easier. You are the one who can change your life, but if you stay home there will be little chances to meet new people. To reduce your anxiety get involved in yoga and acupuncture. This way you will also meet new people. There are a lot of nice people out there. And remember something: everyone has their good and bad side.
