What would you class as too much weight loss and what time scale?!

Question: What would you class as too much weight loss and what time scale?
What would you class as a dramactic weight loss in a short amount of time?

Like percentage of body weight lost in certain amount of weeks/months

Answers:

10% is generally what doctors look for in say signs of depression or illness. If you drop 10% of the weight you had within a short period of time (few weeks) then you need to find out why. You may be physically ill, depressed or manic as well as possibly anorexia. Has anyone suggested you may be anorexic? Trouble with that is that the sufferer feels overweight despite dropping weight substantially and looking ill to others. If you were very overweight and then went on a diet then a drop of 10% is not a bad thing. If you had a normal weight then lost 10% it would be unusual and should have a reason behind it that needs investigating.

Norman is correct in his answer. If you lose weight too quickly, your body will go into a starvation mode and decrease your metabolism. This will make it harder to lose weight and it will decrease the amount of energy you have. Regular aerobic exercise (walking is the best for weight loss) will not only burn calories but will also increase your metabolism. This will increase your energy level and cause your body to burn more calories even when resting.

I used to work as a Registered Nurse.

You can safely lose 1-2 pounds a week if you reduce your caloric intake and walk 1 1/2 to 2 miles three or four times in a week. This is being realistic.
It has worked for me. I lost 60 pounds in about 7 months, that's about 2 pounds a week. I weighed 270 when I started. With walking I have been able to keep it off.

Dieting has to happen gradually. If it were really easy to lose a lot in a short span of time, gaining weight should come as equally fast as well. The thought of losing weight so fast would be very dangerous, that it would mean if we were not able to eat for a few days, we would probably die immediately. This, by the way, is another common thing that people believe in - the fasting of food. A good number of people believe that by starving themselves, they will drastically thin out. The body does not work that way. The body needs vitamin and minerals, which it absorbs to make it healthy and function properly. You can make this productive by changing the type of food you ingest by picking healthy and nutritious food. Try to eat a lot more vegetables, fruits, and grains. Cut back on foods with high calories and high fat.
