What would happen if I refuse to go to the psych hospital ?!

Question: What would happen if I refuse to go to the psych hospital ?
I'm 16 & the doctors said i'm schizophrenic & bipolar I've been in hospital once before. I'm on meds but apparantley my condition is getting worse. I heard my parents talking to my psychiatrist, He said that if it gets worse I should be put back into hospital. Last time I went willingly because I didn't really know what was happening and I didn't know what the hospital was like. I don't know why they want to put be back. All I know is that I do not want to go. Don't say it's for my own good because I know it's not. What would happen if I refuse ? Can they force me in? What does the Irish law say about that?

Answers:

I don't know about Ireland, but I'd guess in most western countries if you're a minor (and at 16 I'm not sure that's the case in Ireland) OR if you're a danger to yourself or others, then you can be forcibly put back in the hospital. If I was you, I'd ask for a second opinion about your diagnosis and plead with your parents to send you to a psychiatrist or a different psychiatrist, who can work diligently with you to find meds that address your symptoms. The problem with schizophrenics though, is they are often unwilling to take meds, so they end up back in hospitals. You have to be willing to take meds, and remember that most people take meds for their brain, some good some bad--it may be a beer, it may be a joint, it may be coffee or cigarettes or lots of sweets or lots of starches, but all those things affect the brain chemistry. Your challenge is to find something, almost certainly prescription meds for schizophrenia, that affects your brain chemistry so that you can stay within the norms of society.

You're sixteen? Then I'm sorry, but if your doctors and parents insist that you go back you don't have a choice. You can try talking to them, though. Tell your parents and your doctor that you really don't want to go back. Explain to them that the hospital honestly doesn't help you at all. Make sure that they see how reasonable you can be, and offer to maybe have extra therapy or diet change or exercise or something like that in exchange. Be sure to explain that you do want to get better, but the hospital isn't the way to go. If you just scream and rage at them, it's actually legal for people to come and take you away to the hospital. You could even not be allowed visitors if they upset you enough. Good luck, and I really hope things get better for you!
