I think I have ADD, but my parents don't believe me?!

Question: I think I have ADD, but my parents don't believe me?
I think I have a really serious case of ADD, I have all the all the symptoms, but mostly i have attention issues, which have GREATLY affected my schoolwork. I try to focus, but I just can't, no matter how badly I want to. Earlier in life, I never had this issue, it wasn't until I started Middle School that this started happening. My mom thinks i'm just being lazy and irresponsible, so does my dad. I tried to speak to my mom about it many times, but she just brushed it off, or told me that she'll look into it, but never does. I remind her DAILY yet she never does, and my dad doesn't believe in all that disorder stuff. ADD runs in my family, I don't get why my parents don't understand. What should I do? This is greatly impacting my life in a very negative way...

Well think back to what changed from elementary to middle school? Hey you had recess! So most likely you can't concentrate due to lack of exercise and your energy is making it hard for you to focus. Start exercising every day and you should see some improvement soon. You don't develop ADD so if you didn't have issues before then you don't have it.

No you cannot. You are born with it. It's not like cataracts or something like that. This is a hereditary condition that cannot be developed over time. A person always has symptoms from birth.

Contrary to one of the posters' belief, you actually CAN develop ADD later in life..
However, it is also quite possible that you have something else on your mind.. Like what she said, you actually will probably see improvements after exercising! :)

As of now, ask your mom if she can make you an appointment for the psychologist and then they can determine once and for all if you suffer from ADD.

what does it matter? if they don't think you have it and you still have it, then you have ADD. If they know you have it, you still have it so it doesn't matter.

I would answer your question, but if you really have ADD, you probably won't get around to reading this.

I'm sorry to hear you are feeling this way! I think the best person to talk to about your concerns would be your doctor. They should be able to give you the time and specific information you need to make an informed diagnosis based on the symptoms you are experiencing. You could also talk to a school counselor, therapist, or pastor/priest. Just talk to someone that you trust and can get you support and help that you need.

If you want to talk, you can also call the Boys Town National Hotline at 1-800-448-3000. You can also email or chat with a Counselor at the website www.YourLifeYourVoice.org. Take Care!
