Taking Xanax under the tongue?!

Question: Taking Xanax under the tongue?
I have been taking Xanax (actually alprazolam) for the last two years, and I have always dissolved it under my tongue and had no problems. With my latest refill, I noticed that the pills looked different (a darker blue). I took my dose last night under my tongue, and this morning, my tongue hurt like hell and some of the "skin" on the underside of my tongue had peeled off, and there is a small sore under my tongue.

I called my pharmacist and asked if they'd changed suppliers. She said that they had. I told her my problem, but she just crabbed at me for taking it under my tongue, that it isn't an FDA approved method. Shouldn't they be concerned at peeling tongue skin? Swallowing them whole just doesn't work as well as dissolving them orally. Does anyone else have any experience with this?

Answers:

I take Xanax, but I've always swallowed it with a glass of water. They're probably not concerned about your peeling tongue skin because dissolving it under the tongue is not the recommended way to take it. The patient information for a lot of meds say don't crush, chew, or dissolve. If the new pills are taking some of your tongue skin off, then about the only thing you can do is swallow them whole.
