Do I have insomnia or anxiety disorder?!

Question: Do I have insomnia or anxiety disorder?
This has been going on since mid October. I just cant seem to sleep. I have been literally living off 3 to 4 hours of sleep. Its driving me nuts because I do not know what the problem is. Now this issue isn't exactly new for me. It would happen all the time in college but then I would realize that I had a big test or paper coming up and as soon as I finished the paper or studied well I would be able to sleep again.

Basically I will wake up exhausted and start to work (I work from home). But then after a couple minutes I will feel wide awake. But I just dont feel like I'm all there mentally. I always have this sicking feeling in my stomach that I am missing something or have forgot to do something. Then after the work day is done I will go about my day and do whatever. But then around midnight when I'm trying to go to sleep I just cant. I will toss and turn for hours and my mind always wanders in a million different places. Sometimes I will just get up and watch mindless TV to abour 4 or 5 in the morning before I finally fall asleep. But even then I will just jerk awake with my heart beating fast. You know the feeling you get sometimes when you cant remember if you locked the doors or closed the garage door at night. It keeps eating at you until you check then usually after you check you can go back to sleep comfortably.

Well for me this feeling never goes away I dont know what is going on. Now when this started I had just broken up with my GF but it was not a real serious relationship we had only been dating for about 4 months. So I dont think that is the issue. Does anyone know what I'm dealing with? Have you ever had this last this long? What should I do? Right now the only way I can get some sleep is by going to the bar with friends and just getting completely hammered until I pass out.

Answers:

It sounds like you are experiencing anxiety along with early waking insomnia. I have both. It might be time to go and see your doctor about this.

I no longer have a problem falling asleep, I have learned through therapy to not stop and think about the thoughts that are going through my mind, I don't try to stop them but, I don't stop and think about them either. I also wake up startled, that is from the anxiety.

It seems like your college life and now your adult life are somewhat similar and this could be why you are
experiencing the same symptoms.
A few session with a therapist might be all you need.

You could have both. You should go and see a doctor, because yourself definitely not sleeping enough.
