Question: How much medication is considered an overdose ? How much more requires medical intervention?
Answers:
In all technicality, anything over the prescribed amount is considered an overdose (literally: you've taken OVER your DOSAGE). However, clinically, overdosage is used to describe a dose which is not therapeutically safe, has no benefits and a high probability of adverse reactions. This dose varies significantly by medication. There are some where you can take 10x the recommended dose and not have any major complications and some highly concentrated medications can be dangerous at as little as 2x the recommended dose. Age, size, liver and kidney function all factor into this, as well as other predisposing factors.
For example 325mg of aspirin in a healthy person won't be a problem at all, but in a person taking blood thinners (especially strong ones), this can cause deadly hemorrhage.
