The doctor's I take my clients to see, who suffer from depression always say "Exercise and eat well" (Meaning eat properly too as depression can cause you to skip meals) and yes it does really work for them, I'm not really sure how or why, it's something to do with the chemicals in your body that are released.
For some, it's about getting into a "Routine" which makes them happier, as they feel their lives getting back into order. But exercise can also make you more social, which can also make you happier if and when you meet new people.
It is true to some degree. If you eat lots of healthy food such as vegetables and protein and less refined food like chips and anything with lots of additives and with moderate exercise you will feel better. Don't overdo the exercise and get too stiff because you might not feel good and stop exercising.
