Schizophrenia or other mental illness info needed please?!

Question: Schizophrenia or other mental illness info needed please!?
I'm writing a story about a detective with schizophrenia who is trying to find out who is killing people in his town but in the end he realizes its him!.
I don't know if schizophrenia is really the right mental disorder I should be giving him though!.
I've read that schizophrenics are paranoid and can have auditory hallucinations!.
I also understand that the paranoia is usually sporatic and any violence that results from it is generally spontaneous!.
Is it likely at all though for someone with this mental illness to go as far as premeditate murder!?
And are they always aware of their actions while in a state of psychosis!?

I need a mental illness that:
- has periods of psychosis, where the sufferer is not always aware of their actions while in the psychosis after it is over!.
- would have psychotic periods long enough for them to premeditate murder
- would have something that triggers off the psychosis, something clear that isnt a chemical imbalance!.
Hopefully I haven't just made up symptoms to an imaginary disorder lol!.

I hope that this questiomn doesnt offend anyone who has Schizophrenia, but I want my story to be as realistic as possible, as its one of my major assessment pieces for the year, so I really need to get this right lol!.
It's all in the name of research :-)

Answers:
I am schizo and I think you idea is cool, but schizophrenia is not the disease you want!. During the psychosis I am definitely aware of my actions!. If I premeditated murder I would not black out and forget about it at all!. I am not sure exactly what disorder you are looking for, but you might try dissociative identity disorder!. Amnesia is a symptom of that disorder!. I don't know if it will work but you can look it up in the DSM-IVtr to read the criteria!. Good luck with your story!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Do something that will raise public awareness and not reinforce negative public attitudes towards the mentally ill, something with a human heart, instead of focusing on those rare serial killer stories, "out there"!. Make it informative and all encompassing, i must stress that schizos with homicidal tendencies are not as frequent as the media would have us all believe!. Psychosis and mental disease, in general, are not something to be made light of, tread carefully!.!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

a shocking sentence, even from a writer: 'I need a mental illness that!.!.!.' But, if you really want to be inventive and original, look at your own little symptoms of changing humor and make them ten or a hundred times bigger, until they've got the size you need them to be to fit your detective!. Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

That's just what we need, another biased view on mental illness! There are thousands on 'sane' people in the world committing crimes like this, why reinforce a negative stereotype like this!?

Mental illness has a huge stigma attached to it without this sort of 'entertainment'

I suggest if you need to research this, you do so, perhaps meeting some schizophrenic sufferers face to face, you may change your opinion on the illness!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't think schizophrenia is quite what you're looking for!. Maybe look into dissociative identity disorder instead!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
