Personality disorder/therapy question (again)?!

Question: Personality disorder/therapy question (again)!?
Sorry to those you've already read this, I've reposted because I'm still feeling unsure of what to do!. Maybe it's just reassurance or courage I'm looking for, I'm not sure!.

I was just interested in knowing!.!.!.

Of course not wholly reliant on the accuracy of self-diagnosis, I do believe myself to possibly be suffering from a personality disorder!. Throughout my entire life I've had a great deal of difficulty understanding certain behaviours and their causes from my teen years!.

I've only just recently begun counselling to tackle a very long, ongoing depression and wondered perhaps if this is just a typical side-effect to processing some very painful emotions, might it be my way to avoid certain feelings to want to label it instead!?

I live in the UK and what I want to know is if my therapist is qualified to diagnose me if this was the case!? I know she's qualified to deal in the area of psychotherapy with a P!.G Dip!. in Counselling; would this extend to prescribing medication or diagnosing me if need be!?

If I have to see a psychiatrist, will this entail opening up to someone else on the same level!?

I don't wish to be a hypochondriac, becoming comfortable in a 'victim mentality' or expect a diagnosis of a mental disorder or a prescription of meds to ease the work I have ahead of me, but I feel counselling alone seems to treat only surface emotions and not particularly their causes!. As I'm new to this, I'm fairly unfamiliar with what I'm expected to have going on in my head!.

Am I just being paranoid!? Is it not possible to cope with this by myself somehow!?

I'm seeing my therapist tomorrow, who I've only seen for 2 sessions so far!. How do I even begin to talk about something I've buried for so long!? I can
Answers:
If you see a psychiatrist, they will ask you questions about yourself and your behaviour, feelings, etc in order to make a diagnosis!. They will then decide on a course of treatment!. There is no drug treatment for personality disorder, but people with PD often get prescribed anti-depressants because they do suffer with periods of depressive feelings!.
The psych is unlikely to spend time talking in depth about your behavioural problems!. A very small number of consultant psychiatrists in the NHS are also trained psychotherapists, and so will give individual psychotherapy!. It is more likely that you would be referred to a psychologist or specially trained nurse on the mental health team!.
As to what you tell your counsellor, I suggest you tell him/her what you've told us!. But reflect on why it is easier to tell us these issues rather than the counsellor, and why you need total strangers to tell you what to do!.
I think therapy is going to be hard for you, but stick with it 'cos it's the best way to change your life for the better!.

You're not being paranoid, but this doesn't sound like something that anyone could cope with by themselves!.

Counseling does help, and you say your new to it!. You probably just haven't given it enough time, because you won't feel better overnight!. But talking to an objective person about what you have been through does help and your therapist can help guide you on your thought processes and eventually show you how to cope!.

Maybe you could print your statement here and give it to your therapist if you are not sure where to start!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, counselors doint diagnose you and medicate you!. They talk to you!. thats their job!. and if you think you have a personality disorder get used to it!. we all have them wether they be phobias and what not!. Psychiatrists dont deal with personality disorders!. they deal with diseases of the mind!.

no your counselor can refer you to a psychiatrist!. u have to see a regular doctor first!. if he feels you are in a very serious condition that he cant treat, he will refer you to a psychiatrist!. mind you, this will not happen quickly!. it will happen over the course of 6 months!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
