No, they are not similar but a person can have schizophrenia (voices, hallucination, paranoia but NOT split personality) and bipolar disorder (severe mood swings of mania and depression) at the same time!. It is called schizoaffective disorder!.

They are in the same spectrum of diagnoses, but have different criteria to meet before one or the other can be diagnosed!.
There are protocols under the DSM-IV that allow a doctor to give a diagnosis of "Bipolar, schizophrenic type", but when it comes down to that, it would be considered as bipolar not elsewhere classified and not schizophrenia!.

Schizophrenia is when you can hear voices in your own head that aren't in reality, or you can see things that aren't really there!.Some people are meant to have thought delusions also!. I don't know as much about bipolar, but i think it's when you get real sad & then really happy or manic!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Schizophrenia is not necessarily voices in head!. Schizophrenia is constantly being delusional!. People with schizophrenia believe in nonexistant events, which include voices in head, but it encompasses more that just that!.
