It depends on the individuals cognitive level as well as their reaction time and ability to read & understand signs!. Some mildly retarded people are capable or driving though they may require a longer/more intense drivers ed program!. If the person has down syndrome there are also factors such as vision troubles in many cases!. Each person is different!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

A mildly retarded person CAN drive, legally and safely!

There are three criteria that define a person with a mental retardation: an IQ below 70, significant limitations in two or more areas of adaptive behavior (as measured by an adaptive behavior rating scale, i!.e!. communication, self-help skills, interpersonal skills, and more), and evidence that the limitations became apparent before the age of 18!.
