Been seeing a phsychiatrist for over a year, originally for bipolar but?!

Question: Been seeing a phsychiatrist for over a year, originally for bipolar but!?
the more I research and think about it, I don't think I am bipolar at all!. I suffer from mega depressive spells and extreme anxiety, and I think I originally I thought the bipolar was my anxiety episodes, I want to stop taking my mood stabiliser, I don't feel I need it, and I don't think the anti-depressant I am taking helps like it should, its reboxitine (not a seretonin booster like prozac)!. I am not content in the slightest and constantly feel down, shouldn't a good phsychiatrist realise this!? or am I expecting too much!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

First - if you're not happy about your treatment you can always change it - get a new psychiatrist, a new therapist - whatever it takes!. This is about improving your wellbeing, not their wallet!.

Second - Make certain you're honest with your psychiatrist and let him or her know how you feel (ie!. You don't believe your medication is working properly or you don't believe you are bipolar) and see what he or she says!. He or she may see something in you that you are overlooking!. Or have valid reasons to support the treatment you are receiving!.

Third - Honestly examine your symptoms and diagnosis!. It took me many years to accept the fact that I was bipolar!. I actually changed therapists because I so strongly disagreed with the diagnosis! After looking over your symptoms and the standard symptoms of a diagnosis of bipolar, and if it still seems like you've got the wrong diagnosis, it is OKAY to seek a new psychiatrist/therapist!. Getting proper treatment for any mental illness is very important!. You're worth it!.

Forth - Keep in mind that just because a psychiatrist has a degree, doesn't mean he or she is actually a GOOD doctor!. I had one psychiatrist tell me (whilst I was in the hospital for a suicide attempt) that she didn't feel I was trying to get better and no longer wanted me as a patient!. If you suspect your psychiatrists abilities, don't feel trapped into staying with him or her!.

Hope this helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

He won't realize it unless you tell him!. He must depend on your candor and your honesty to successfully treat you!.

Please don't alter your meds without professional approval!.

Did he diagnose you as bi-polar or just take your word for it!?
Bi-polar means you should have some almost euphoric high manic spells as well as the anxiety and low spells!. Sounds like clinical depression, to me (I'm not a pro)

Discuss with him exactly what you're telling us!. Ask him pointed questions about your meds and address all your concerns with him!. There may be a valid medical reason why you are on certain meds as opposed to others!.

If he makes changes, give it a little time to work and keep him apprised of your thoughts and experiences!. Remember, he can't help, if he doesn't know and he only knows if you tell him!.

Good luck with all this!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am not a doctor and I am not going to give you medical advice like these other posters who have never been to MEDICAL SCHOOL, but for a lot of people with mental disorders they don't feel like anything is wrong with them because the medicine IS WORKING!. The number one cause of relapse in symptoms is when patients stop taking their medication because they think they are cured or have been misdiagnosed because they don't have symptoms!. Talk to your doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

DO NOT stop taking your meds!. It may feel like they are not helping you but most likely they are!. If you feel the diagnosis has changed get a second opinion!. You say you have depressive spells and anxiety but do you have the upsweep of extreme highs!?!? If you do you are bipolar!. If not then you need to get that second opinion!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

stop taking that sYht or your liver will shut down!.It doesn't work, just causes other symptoms!.My best friend is on prozac, I really don't know why, but I swear they are just sugar pills!.
I pulled myself out of a seven year depression without the drugs and spending oodles of money on so-called shrinks!.They can't even help themselves!.
If you really want to get better You and GOD can do it!.You don't need anyone to tell you that you have an issue!.If they don't truly know what it is they will just make up something to get your money!.**change your surroundings**Www@Answer-Health@Com

Never take these kind of decisions alone!.

You have a perfect right to question your psychiatrist but you should do that with the help of another professional!. There's no rush either, find another health professional that you trust then think about making changes and talk to the one you have now about your doubts!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Never go off your medication without medical intervention!.

Tell your psychiatrist how you feel and see if there is something else you could take!.

One of the side effects of Bi-Polar is the feeling that you don't need medication!. Beware of self diagnosis!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Psychiatrist can only give answer if they have experienced it or if they already made researched on it!.
They can hardly give the best and most accurate answer to people who have problems!. My point is only you know your problem well!. Others can only give opinions!. So!.!.!.think!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Talk to your doctor, he might help you decrease the dosage gradually until you're off it or stay with a very small dosage and DO START SOME CARDIO EXERCISE everyday that will make you feel so good!.!.you'll see the difference in about a week!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Talk to your doctor about the medication, if you feel its not helping or you want to get off it the doctor can advise you best! If you feel your Phsych isn't helping ask to be referred to a different one sometimes they understand better!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You're not expecting too much!. Express your lack of improvement with the psychiatrist!. If s/he doesn't think anything needs to change, change psychiatrists!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

people are only human you shgould tell the shrink everything about you and you shouldn't stop taking your pillsWww@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, the shrink dosn't sound that great!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

no yr not expecting much they are just to lazy to do their job!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your psychiatrist will only know what you tell him/her!. If you are quiet/shy/understated about conveying info, s/he isn't gonna get it!. Then again, if you are seeing an obtuse doc, well, you're seeing an obtuse doc who can't hear!. If that's the case, get a new doc!.

I have bipolar and have tried lowering my meds!. It turned out to be a very bad idea!. Based on that, my recommendation is to take it slow in coordination with your doc!. There is a fair chance that they are doing something and it's just not enough!. If you can get off them w/o problems, then yes, maybe you were misdiagnosed!.

FYI - there are two schools of thought on antidepressants for those with bipolar disorder!. One is that they help some more than they cause harm!. The other is that they should never be prescribed because the A!. do nothing or only do a little and then stop working, B!. cause mixed states, or C!. flip ppl to hypo/mania!. If you are bipolar, there's a good chance your antidepressant is doing nothing!. Lamictal would be a good anticonvulsant to try since it has a strong antidepressant effect!. It's used for difficult to treat depression as well as bipolar!. You might want to look into it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I cna understand your point and if you have explained this to your physchiatrist then they should be offering a more productive method of helping you get better!. As with all medication you should never stop taking it ithout consulting your g!.p first!. My mother is a bi polar manic depresant and after many years on her tablets she had an episode that tipped her over the edge, her medication was no longer subtible for her and the people dealing with her failed to notice!. She ended up spending 6 months in a mental hospital until they adjusted her medication!. You should inform your g!.p that you no longer wish to take mood stabilisers and your g!.p will be happy to help as they are always trying to stop people turning to tablets as a way of getting better!. At the end of the day it's all the mind and if your mind feels strong enough to cope then it' probably right!. You can ask your g!.p to also prescribe you a diffrent form of anti depresants and your therapist and g!.p can moniter you to make sure they are right for you!. It'll be a case of trial and error but if you think your ready then it's your mind and you should go for it!. Be proud this is a big step to take and i hope it al works out for you!.

THESE ARE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BIPOLAR DISORDER IF YOU FEEL THIS IS NOT YOU GET A NEW DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY!. A DOCTOR TRIED TO DIAGNOS ME WITH MANIC DEPRESSION AND I ALMOST LOST MY MIND BECAUSE OF ALL THE MEDS THEY GAVE ME!. I STOPPED THE MEDICATIONS WHEN I SAW A NEW DOCTOR!. DON'T JUST QUIT COLD TURKEY OR WITH OUT A SECOND OPINION THOUGH IT COULD CAUSE HARMFUL SIDE EFFECTS!. TELL THE DOCTOR HOW YOU FEEL AND WHAT YOU WANT BE HONEST!.
