Let's see, dictionary definitions would say:

sadness: follows losses or disappointments, and is a normal part of any fully lived life!.

depression: often experience marked sadness in the absence of any cause, whereas healthy individuals have moods that relate more to life experiences, and moods that are in proportion to the intensity of those experiences!.

But I would have to say out of my opinion!.!.!. being sad is when something upsetting [or around those lines] occurs and the feeling following it, being sad!.
Depression sometimes involves suicidal thoughts, being upset all the time, sometimes eating disorders could occur, locking yourself in your bedroom!.!.!. etc!. Depression is a worse form of sadness!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

In my opinion!.!.!.Being sad may last a few minutes, hours or just a few days!. Depression is an ongoing and usually building illness!. Depression is like having diabetes- when a person has depression the serotonin in the brain is off balance, diabetes the blood sugar is off balance and usually controlled with medication!. Sadness doesn't control your life, a person can find a way to get over being sad or deal with it, depression takes over!. Please go talk to someone if you are depressed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

sadness does not lead to depression!. that said, sadness is a normal emotion that one would have for a relatively short amount of time!. when those feeling last weeks, that's when one is considered depressed!. depression is a chronic condition!. sadness, just a regular old emotion!.!.!. we all experience it unfortunately!.

Sadness must be ongoing and symptoms such as sleeping more or less, loss of interest in activities or friends, change in weight and appetite, etc, must last for at least 3 weeks for the MD to diagnose depression!. Hope things are okay with you!. Take care!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Ziggy Ma has summed it up very well in her answer!. We all get sad from time to time, that's life!. When in depression for long periods, you need the help of a psychiatrist to teach you how to manage and cope with the disorder!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
