What options are available to people who have been diagnosed with a mental illne!
Question: I'm worried about a friend who has recently been committed. When he gets out, what kind of free continued care will be availbable to him? Are there facilties (like nursing homes) that house the mentally ill but allow them a sense of freedom? I'm worried that my friend will have no where to live when he gets out!!

It depends on what he was commited for, but yes there are many options available for continued outpatient care. they will provide him with several choices when it is time for him to leave the institution. It really depends on what type of care he needs and where you are located...but like I said, they will give him all that information when he gets out.
Mental illness is so wide ranging that its hard to know exactly what your friend will require. I had a mate whose depression got so bad he had to be committed for his own safety. Hes come out and is absolutely perfect now. A lot of illness can be controlled with drugs and ongoing counselling allowing the person to live a completely normal life.
If its so bad that the person cannot look after themselves then usually they will be referred to a nursing facility of some kind (depends on country and whats available in your area).
