Paxil, Prozac, Seroquel, other antidepressants...?!

Question: Why is there a "risk of suicidal behavior" printed on the contraindications but absolutely no acknowledgement of "homicidal tendencies" listed?

Seems to me that a great number of people killing others lately are on these medications (guaranteed the guy in Illinois will be shown to have taken these when the autopsy report comes out) and I want to know why the drug companies are misleading or intentionally omitting this fact off of their contraindications.

If "homicidal behavior" was added and proven, should we take these drugs off of the market? Who out there taking them would continue? Who would start them without having previously taking them before if you were told it could turn you into a killer?

Is this the pharmaceutical companies having more blatent disregard for citizens and only caring about how much money they can make off of everyone?

What do you think?

i think that anti-depressants do actually help some ppl, but some ppl take them because they aren't really depressed and use them for a certain high they get off of it...and they turn into killers (homicidal and suicidal)...doctors should just really make sure a person is depressed before they just say oh she's sad...she needs anti-depressants! I believe that the companies are just puttin sh!t on the market now!! they aren't really testing them to get all of the kinks and stuff out...but if people do take them the right way when they are supposed to then they probably wouldnt turn into serial killers lol hopefully i read the question right!

Risk of suicidal behaviour is for people like me who have had their condition exacerbated by the medication, though I'm not sure about the 'homicidal tendencies' disclaimer being added to antidepressants. That seems to be more of a case of an inherent psychological or behavioural disturbance, rather than something that an SSRI drug was the catalyst for.

I take Prozac..and have NEVER been homicidal..or suicidal.
Yes..there are risks with ANYTHING...do they CAUSE people to become homicidal???...I really DON'T think so...could he have been ON this medication? Certainly. Did it CAUSE him to shoot people...no...
Blaming medications is just one thing some folks use to "justify" bad or illegal behavior...
They do more GOOD than harm...
I DO NOT think the medical community as a whole is trying to hide side affects...fool the public or harm the public...
period.

I had a stroke in 2000 after which I would get emotional and cry at the drop of a hat, in my line of work this was more debilitating than the stroke, I also lost impulse control or common sense. Once I took a walk up to the neighborhood Stop & Drop, and rather than wait for the light to change came within inches of stepping out into a very busy street. I went to a psychiatrist and she prescribed Zoloft, I have not had a drastic mood swing and got control of abnormal impulses.

in the 1950's there were several million people locked up in mental institutions. today there are but a few hundred thousand and many go home to lead normal lives with the help of these medications. look at all the innocent people locked in prisons in this country. and the innocent people on death row. should we dissolve the justice system because of this. no. there is nothing is perfect but these meds are nothing short of a miracle. the benefits massively out way the risks.

I think your information is wrong about homocidal tendencies.
There is risk with everything you ingest. It may help or may make things worse.
For example: I know people who smoke marijuana 24/7 and function relatively well. I also have known people who have smoked one joint and have experienced a psychotic break.
After being wrongly diagnosed with schizophrenia i was put on Seroquel. One hour after takeing the medication i would experience extreme panic attacks until i passed out from exhaustion. The doctors could not explain the reaction.
I think to blame the medication is ignoring the reason the medication was prescribed. You also have to consider the other aggitation factors in these cases. People who do not take medication have homocidal tendencies. I know people who's quality of life would be 0 if they did not take these medications.
Maybe you should ask G W B if he takes these medications?

I understand where your coming from.I take 150 mg of Effexor and i feel great. They work differently for certain people.Maybe these folks had the desire to kill before.I dont know but i am happier than i have ever been and i have been on this for 2 years. It really has helped me.Now prozac i had panic attacks. My son saw little men so it's hard to say what other people see. It's a difficult question to answer. It helps some but not others.Welbutrin i dont think is a very good drug i got real mean on it.I forgot i had taken years ago.You actually have good questions. But i don't think all antidepressants are bad.

I'm REALLY REALLY getting tired of people blaming the medication instead of the person!!!!!!! I'm willing to bet that it will be found that this person WASN'T USING HIS MEDICATIONS!!!! When you hear about these things almost always the person had STOPPED USING his medications. You don't hear of people doing this WHILE ON MEDS!!!!! Which should prove to people that it's not the medications that are causing this it's coming off of them with out a doctor's assistance that causes the problems. Medications have helped millions of people be able to live their lives and to make solid contributions to the rest of society instead of having to live life in a hospital and be a drain on society who than has to support them. Why don't people get the facts before making blanket statements about medications for the mentally ill??? When someone has found to have done these things do we ask if they were on medications for blood pressure or thyroid disorder??? The same thing applies to mental illness. I'm tired of people like you making it harder for people like me to get the help that they need because of stereotypes perpetrated by people reactions to things like this.

Just for you information since you aren't as informed as you think Serquel is not an anti-depressant it's a anti-psychotic.

IF you used to be a nurse than you don't advocate for yourself very well if you're in chronic pain and can't get meds!!!! Three years ago a federal law was passed that stated that doctors had to evaluate for pain and it's severity and to treat it as needed. Hospital funding is at peril if that isn't dealt with so either you don't know what you're doing or you're the hostile one. But what ever I"ve learned over the years of dealing with a physical disability and a learning and psychiatric ones, That most people who are anti medications don't really know what they are talking about.

Whether they were medical professionals or not.
