Answers: to brain chemistry involving dopamines and serotonins which stabilize depression and mood? that type of thing?

The body get s so use to being artificially stimulated by drugs and alcohol it takes sometimes up to a year for the brain readjust to making the natural amount of dopamine. And the person has a hard time during this period because nothing feels as good as it use to and its a time of very high risk of relapse. Thats why it is so important to create a support system to get you through that, AA, hobbies, family, creative endevours, treatment, reading inspirational materials, connecting to whatever your spirituality consists of.
There is also "wet brain" ie. Korsakoffs Syndrome (sp?) in the chronic stages of alcoholism which is irreversible brain damage.

Yes, it is called, 'wet brain' ...or as my friends call it, 'pickled'.

Well, alcohol is a depressant and if you were a long time alcoholic I think that your brain would be used to being in that state. I think that it could affect your brain chemistry but I think that it should be able to go back to normal, especially with some help of some medication. I'd go in to see someone.

I know the liver could be compromised by alcohol.

I remember watching this show on Court TV once where this woman left her husband who was a longtime alcoholic. Well, a few years go by and the husband gets his act together, sobers up and goes back to her to ask for a second chance. The woman believes him and they make arrangements to take a cruise together and get reaquaintted. So, they're in a hotel room near the port the night before they set sail and the guy up and dies and she is arrested.
Turned out to be the effects of withdrawal... so yeah, alcoholism will f you up.

Yes many parts of the brain are affected by alcohol abuse. It can lower production of dopamine and seretonin, very prolonged alcohol use can cause wet brain which is severe brain damage. Alcohol also damages the hippocampus which is the part of your brain used in decision making and deciding between what is right and wrong. If you need help there are a lot of great treatment programs available out there
