I'm terrified I'm going to suffer from schizophrenia because my mom has !

Question: Well I am now 18 years old and believe I'm suffering from some type of anxiety. My mother has schizophrenia, i don't know much about how she got it, my dad will not talk to me about it and her parents have passed away. I think I may have social anxiety because for the last 4 months I've been terrified of social situations and avoid my friends. I tend to over analyze everything. It's very hard for me to have a conversation with anyone. I'm not sure if these are signs of early schizophrenia and if they are what do I do? I see what my mom has to go through everyday and if that is going to soon happen to me I don't think I want to go on living. If anyone could give me some advice or information, I'd appreciate it, thank you.

Chill, You don't have it, beleieve me, I just recently took a psychology class and I was worried to I might have had it since my grandfather had symtoms of it as a child, but I realized in my class, that those whom unfortunetly suffer from being Schizo develope it in their early childhood years to their early teen years. Judging by what your telling me, It sounds like you have a little anxiety issue and beleive me anxiety is just a cureable disorder not a disease. A little cognitive behavior therapy or self help books can help you overcome that. But don't worry your not going crazy and your safe from having schizophrenia and if yoyur still worrying about it, think of this, my aunt had a husband who was a psychiatrist and her husband tried tested perscriptions on those who had schizophrenia and had found it to be a cure for it so even if you feel like your gonna go crazy, don't worry like I just previously said the medical centers have certain prescriptions for those who have it to be cured just like my grandfather whom is cured of it.

So don't worry about it You'll be alright.

if it was going to happen to you, it would have by now.

Just because your mother has it, does NOT mean you will Ihave it. What you described above sounds a lot like what I have. I suggest you go to your doctor and tell him exactly what you told us. He might prescribed an SSRI to relieve your anxiety. But in any event, he would be more suitable in telling you exactly what you are suffering from. Schizophrenia is genetic but the good news is they have meds so you can live a long and productive life. Assuming, of course, you stay on your meds. Good luck to you.

you likely don't have it. with identical twins, if one has it, there is only a 70% correlation that the other will. with regular siblings its well under30% the chances are about the same for you w/ your mom, because the genetic similarity is about the same percentage with reg siblings as on parent (about 50%)

Just know the symptoms and signs and then continue on with your life. If anything happens, it will trigger a familiarity bell in the back of your mind and you can go to a doctor and get it checked up on. Easy peasy.
