What is the difference between Bipolar 1 and Bipolar 2?!

Question: Technically speaking, the difference between 1 and 2 is that while both experience depressive episodes a person with bipolar 2 doesn't have fully manic or mixed episodes. They experience what are called hypomanic episodes, which have all the symptoms of a manic epsiode, but are less severe and don't interfere as much with life.

Sounds like Bipolar the sequel...

it has to do with the degree in with the swing between manic and depression stage. if a person in a manic stage which is pretty much a overabundance. bipolar people in the manic stage love to be around people, outgoing, and very active exc. so everyone love a bipolar person in this stage. but for the depression stage they are completely opposite. they stay away from people, don't talk to people and stay inside. everyone can be different on how often they swing from the stage. some people can be one mood for months then to the other for awhile. and some people can swing many time within a day.

BP I is what people picture when they hear "bipolar"...kind of the classic form.
Both types experience at least one depressive episode. People with BP II do not have full blown mania like people with BP I have. Instead, they experience hypomania - an elevated mood, high irritability, etc. Full blown mania is more intense and can include psychotic symptoms. It tends to start out as a pleasant, highly productive period with all sorts of ambition and belief in oneself.
But the energy increases and it becomes more of a frenzied thing. This is a time when people do things like get themselves into large amounts of debt or start behaving in a really irrational manner with little concept of or regard for reality.
The depressive episodes tend to be very bad in bipolar disorder.
It would be inaccurate to say BP 2 is a milder illnes. Both types can turn the patients world upside down, turn their life inside out, and cause tremendous amounts of suffering and difficulty functioning in the world.

An straightforward distinction is how severely an episode impacts a person. Severe impairment when someone has a manic episode and they required hospitalization, they would be considered for a diagnosis of Bipolar I.
Bipolar II, has many different specifiers - types of episodes and severity.
This is just a basic guide - true diagnosis takes a thorough interview and history.
