What exactly is schizoaffective?!

Question: I have looked it up, but if someone could explain it to me other than in MD terms, that would be great.

Answers: I have looked it up, but if someone could explain it to me other than in MD terms, that would be great.

There is a lot of research debating the very existence of this illness. There are many people who do research on schizophrenia who do not believe that this disorder is separate from schizophrenia. Most people who develop it, end up with mainly psychotic symptoms, and it is generally deemed to be schizophrenia. Those with mainly mood symptoms generally end up having their diagnosis changed to a primary affective disorder...either major depression with psychosis or bipolar disorder.

Furthermore, genetically, most people with schizoaffective disorder have family members with a primary psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia. Others that have primarily mood symptoms usually only have a family history of mood disorders.

These disorders do not develop on their own. You would need a genetic predisposition to it. In other words, someone in your family should have had a psychotic disorder.

Yes, you can have schizoaffective disorder without seeing or hearing things, just as you can have schizophrenia without hallucinations. That being said, it's unlikely to have either of those illnesses without hallucinations. The criteria for the illness, basically states that you have to meet criteria for schizophrenia at some point, meaning it has to have lasted more than six months, have psychosis (delusions, paranoia, hallucinations etc.) and have a period where this occurs two weeks without mood symptoms. If this only happens when you are depressed or manic then, it's an affective disorder either depression or bipolar

Schizo affective is a combination of several things. One your schizo and two you have a mood disorder. Like depression, anxiety... the schizo part is hearing voices, having hallucinations. Best of luck. Try reading all of this.

To me it means you have some of the traits of schizo but not totally gone yet. Suicide has to be ruled our for now.

Schizoaffective is where you have characteristics of schizophrenia and a mood disorder. And I think with schizoaffective, you usually hear voices and stuff.
