How to take care of myself?!

Question: There are so many things that I know that I need to do, that when I do them, I feel happiness--stop drinking, get out more, make friends...why is it so hard to do these things? It is like I know what to do but just can not seem to do it.

Calling to see someone is a mess--no one available, try out of network so you can tell 10 more people what the problem is while I sit in my office cubicle and the whole office gets to know that I am a complete nut case---great.

What the heck is going on with me?

Set the earliest appointment available and keep it. You may have to wait awhile...but it will be worth it. While your depression may feel very intense... it will keep! Until you can begin therapy...use the Hotline for support. There are many available. The bottom line is that YOU are responsible for your actions and reactions... and while there is help available...YOU have to want to be well. Some people come to depend on the drama of their emotional condition for attention and validation; be careful not to become one of them. Good luck!

Maybe you should take a vacation. I'll pray for you.

I would recommend a therapist. Sometimes things seem so big and out of control...but as the saying states "You can't see the forest from the trees." There's probably a simple solution to these overwhelming problems that you may be blinded to.

Have you tried volunteering for a good cause? It takes your mind off yourself, and the people (or animals) you are helping will be glad to see you and lift your spirits. You could volunteer at your local old folks home or animal shelter. This website has good ideas: www.dosomething.org
You type in your zip code and find volunteer jobs near you.

I think you're just in a slump. You'll be ok. After work today, do something simple that makes you happy. Go for a walk, read a book, anything that you enjoy. Push yourself to take the first step, you'll feel better when you're done. :)
