Why Lexotan (Bromazepam) discontinued in the UK in January 2002?!

Question:

Why Lexotan (Bromazepam) discontinued in the UK in January 2002?

Answers:

Firstly drugs in the UK are often called different names in the US Lexotan is used mainly to treat insomnia and anxiety. It belongs to a class of drugs named benzodyazapines which are old style anti depressants/ hypnotics they are known for quick dependency (addiction sort of) build up and quick decline in effectiveness. Lexotan was made by Roche for the short term treatment of anxiety, however government legislation regarding the benzo' group of drugs (short term only) and the advent of Serotonin Re uptake inhibitors (SSRI's) eg seroxat, prozac etc made there profitability not worth while for Roche and they handed over the banner to the generics companys from a quick search in the drugs registry shows the drug to have been discontinued entirely meaning that the generics sore no profit in it. Other than the known issues of the entire Benzo group I can find no reference to this product being singled out as particually bad, which lead me to the profitability conclusion. For anxient and insomnia these days there are much better drugs on the market anyway.
