Natural remedies for throat infections?!

Question:

Natural remedies for throat infections?

I've had a throat infection for a while now, and I've been taking penicillin as prescribed, it only seemed to get worse.

Whenever I have throat problems, my mum suggests squeezing 1 lemon and 1 orange, heating it up a bit, adding honey and a bit of cognac, it normally helps a lot but this time it's not working, does anyone have any similar suggestions?

Answers:

If you have strep throat, that is caused by a virus and will not be killed by antibiotics like penicillin. Your own immune system must fight off the strep. The penicillin is to prevent an oportunistic bacteria from moving in and setting up shop while your immune system is busy fighting off the strep. The greatest risks while you have strep throat is scarlet fever and endocarditis- an inflammation of the heart sac, caused by bacteria taking advantage of things. The thing that helps sore throats most is moisture of all sorts. Try putting a pot on the boil, to add water to the air about you. Sip something constantly. If the tea isn't soothing, try cold liquids, frozen juice pops, freezer pops, or sucking on hard candy constantly. You can also see if the chemist has a throat spray that contains lidocaine topical, to help numb things long enough for you to eat at least something. Strep throats often feel the worst after the first week, and gradually should improve around the end of the second week. Seems like ages when you have sandpaper for a throat, but that's the honest truth of it. Rest, fluids, and a pain reliever for the aches and pains is about all you really can do. And do continue the antibiotic, it's really a good necessary precaution. Hope it feels better soon for you.
