Why do chiropractors call themselves Doctors?!

Question: Why do chiropractors call themselves Doctors!?
They don't have a MD, they shouldn't be called doctor, right!? They even go by like Dr!. Bob, and such!. Isn't this silly!? Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
And they ask me why I drink!.

Let's get this nonsense settled!. If by doctor you mean someone who has graduated from an accredited medical school, the chiros, by definition, are NOT and CANNOT be medical doctors!. I'm leaving PHd's, DD's, etc!. out of this!.

But the chiros ARE involved in medicine -their wacky ideas about it, anyway!. And so, to achieve credibility, they refer to themselves as "doctors!." Not a chance!. Until you get that MD from an accredited institution, you just ain't a doctor, period!.

More years than MD's!? The chiro may tell you that, but that's another bit of propaganda!. Here's what the Cleveland Chiropractic College says of its program:

"Cleveland offers a four-year, 12-trimester Doctor of Chiropractic degree, as well as an accelerated program covering the same curriculum in just 10 trimesters!." Oh, goodie -I'll take the 10 trimester deal and graduate a doctor!.

Now, you show ME where an MD gets a degree and is admitted to practice in 4 years!. Sure, they're might be 4 years of med school, but that's just to get ready for residency!. Here's what George Washington U Med school says:

"The curriculum leading to the Doctor of Medicine degree is designed to provide a medical education that prepares graduates comprehensively for residency training, provides them the experience on which to base their career selection, and prepares them for professional lives of continuous learning!." Didja catch that!? "PREPARES" you for residency TRAINING!.

In other words, those four years are just training you to be trained!

"Doctor of Chiropractic!?" Sure, sure, just like "Doctor of Upholstery," "Doctor of Wine," or anything else that wants to award a "doctor of" designation!.

NOT the same as an MD!.

Clear!?

Good!.

Edit: Good grief!. They (the chiros) and the acupuncturists and the physical theapists and home health care people and pharmacists and wheel chair vendors -everyone who is on the health benefits gravy train- are not all classified as "doctors!." Rather, they are called "providers!."

It will be a dark day when we look toward regulatory definitions for reimbursement to qualify anyone as a "doctor," meaning a "medical doctor!."Www@Answer-Health@Com

Lots of people without MDs are "doctors" in a sense (eg people with PhDs, who are sometimes called "doctor" but who are not medical doctors)

HOWEVER chiropractors are no sort of doctor at all!. It's simply misleading!.

The same can be said of Opticians who call themselves doctors!. It's just not true!.

______
Those of you who say chiropractic training is "longer than an MD" are probably not including medical residency, without which you cannot practice medicine, and is often longer than medical school itself!. Doctors regularly do 8, 9, or 10 years of training (not including a 3 or 4 year undergraduate degree); chiropractic school is a fraction of that!.

Also, chiropractors do not get degrees from accredited institutions the way people with MDs, PhDs, BAs, Law Degrees, etc do!. So, while I'm sure they get valuable education where they study, their credentials are only valued by other chiropractors!. Anyone can set up a school and call a piece of paper a "doctoral degree" but that doesn't make it so!. There are Bible Colleges that hand out PhDs, it doesn't make them real PhDs!.

_______
and MEGA LOL to whoever said Chiros are the "only reliable source of medical information, since they look at the whole body"!! LOL! Chiros relate every single condition to the spine! What a joke!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The whole label calling Medical physicians Doctor is actually very misleading!.
A true 'Doctor' is someone who has a PHD!. The word Comes from the latin 'Docere' which means to teach!.
In everyday practice I satisfy this remit quite well as my role is to educate the patient to help themselves!. I don't know if medics can say the same!.

Several hundred years ago someone thought it would be a bright idea to give medical physicians this title (honorary)!.

Since then the word Doctor is associated with the medical profession!.
In reality most medical physicians do not have PHD's and haven't earn't this title!.

Interestingly when I practised Osteopthy in Britain I was barred from using the title Doctor By the General Osteopthic Council!. I moved to new Zealand and no such restrictions apply!.
Opticians, Physiotherapist, chiros, Osteopaths and a whole host of other health care professionals can use this honorary title if they so choose!.

I don't have a problem with this as Medical physicians haven't studied to a higher level than i have, they have just studied for a longer period of time!. Time isn't the issue here if someone does one undergraduate degree and upon graduation studies another undergrad degree they will have completed more hours than a medical physician but are not entitled to use that honorary title by default!.

In NZ most conventional medics are happy to be refered to by their first name so consequently most of the other honary bearers of the title don't bother to use it either!.

I seldom do unless I am signing an official document mostly because i don't like to associate myself with legalised drug dealers!.

If it was up to me I wouldn't alow conventional medics to use this title or any other healthcare professional unless they had a PHD!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Chiropractic doctors, by the definition used by those who write legislation and insurance laws, are primary care doctors!. This simply means that patients can come to them directly for care, without being referred by any other physician!.

Have you ever been to a chiropractor!? They are often the only reliable source of medical information, since they look at the whole body, and don't just prescribe drugs to treat symptoms!.

If you went to college, weren't most of your professors called "Doctor something"!? It's a common title for someone with a certain amount of post graduate education!.

Www@Answer-Health@Com

Then why are people with PhDs called doctors!? Simply put, a chiropractor has extensive training in the anatomical structure of the human body!. Their education is just as long and longer as an MD and they achieve a Doctorate Degree!. Otherwise, you're putting your back into the hands of someone who may not know what they are doing and that can lead to permanent paralysis!. Consider asking a chiropractor a question you would ask an MD and you'll learn they will know the answer!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You can have a Doctorate degree without being a medical doctor!. One of our pastors had a doctorate and he was called Dr!. John!. It's a matter of respect!. Even though I would never see a chiropractor, I would respect them and called them doctor!.
Edit, I read some of the other posts, I must say I agree with them!. My cousin IS a medical doctor!. He spent 14 yrs total in pre-med, med, residencies, then even after he graduated, they do not consider you "legal" until you pass the medical board exams!. Chiros, never, ever, spend that much time in shcool!. Which is why I would never trust my aches and pains to anyone other than my own Orthopedic MD!. Another thing, Once a doctor gets his MD, if he wants to specialize in something else, then he has to take more schooling, My cousin did this and became a kidney specialist!. He is a Nephrologist in California!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Got news for you!.!.!.chiropractors actually go to school longer than a regular MD!. Pull up there credentials!.!.!.they are Doctors!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Ok top contributor Jen - a professor only can be called doctor if he is a Phd!. That means doctor of philosophy not medical doctor!.
A Chiropractor is neither a medical doctor or a Phd and of course their view of medicine and what ails is biased and of course they will tell you your doctor is wrong!.
Any 'doctor' who can only keep you well if you see him once a week forever is not doing anything for you except placebo and maintenance of your current state of ill health!.
Don't ask your chiropractor if he thinks he is smarter than a physician -ask him how many people have had strokes or been put in wheelchairs by their profession!.
A friend of mine had me go to a lecture by a chiro once with her and when he started claiming he could cure cancer I left!.

TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION:

The only people who are supposed to always be addressed as doctor are medical doctors!.

Phd's are only to be addressed as doctor in their own professional or peer setting!.
Calling a Phd or dentist 'doctor' in a social setting is considered extremely gauche!.
As for Dr!. Bob the chiro!.!.!.!.

May I ask how everyone who answered this intelligently with true facts got many thumbs down and the incorrect answers got thumbs up!?
Saying everyone who provides health care and all professors are doctors does not deserve thumbs up!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
