Somebody tell me Metformin can not be taken if I am not a diabetes patient.?!

Question: I am not yet diabetes but I was started on Metformin 250mg 3 times a day by a physician for weight control. My sister told me, her friend who work in the diabetes clinic told her not to start this medication if I am not yet diagnose as diabetes because this may bring me to diabetes. I had my blood check 2 days ago and my fasting blood sugar was 7.2mmol/L. This reading is higher than the normal reading. As I know, the reading should not be up to 6.5mmol/L. Is that what people telling is true?

So you will believe second hand info rather than your doctor?

Your blood sugar level is in the diabetic range, that is likely why your doctor started you on Metformin. Did you also get a referral to a diabetes clinic to discuss diet etc. Not keeping your blood sugar under control can lead to kidney, heart, eye, and brain damage.

If concerned, call the prescribing doctor with this question.

yes it is above normal. the metaformin is not a diet pill it is a diabetic medication . i use it as well as insulin . there are many reasons for the high blood sugsr readings . it is a through hospital adminsterd test over three days . i think you just had a simole reading test of a finger prick , do not use these pills you could suffer super crash, you have gotten bad advice . see another doctor asap thank you.

Anyone with a fasting A1C blood sugar test that high is certainly Diabetic; and taking Metformin will help your body process glucose. I take 500mg twice daily .... and they may very well adjust your meds, down even, as you learn to control it ....

But, you should also take nutrition classes; most hospitals provide them, and most insurance carriers cover any related costs. Bring the cook in the home along too; this needs to become a lifestyle change to assure you do no damage internally.

You should learn how to monitor your own sugar, so you can learn to understand what foods effect you the most; for there is no such thing as being just a little diabetic, that would be like saying one was just a little pregnant!

I know it is a BAD word, but EXERCISE is a key factor too .....

The first two answers were accurate.

Are you sure you understood what your physician was telling you?

To be perscribed metformin means you need help with your blood sugar.

I don't take metformin anymore. I control my diabetes with diet and exercise now.

It is a diabetes medicine. I know as I am a pharmacy techinician. You better go to another doctor and not take this medicine. It could make you become diabetic.
